As we’ve officially entered peak hurricane season here in Florida, this month we’re writing about preventative measures and storm damage repairs. With an emphasis on preserving natural environments and promoting conservation, Nature Bridges has always placed priority on meeting strict building standards and building structures that withstand high winds and ominous storm threats.
In October of last year, Hurricane Michael made landfall in the Panhandle as a Category 5 hurricane. Floridians are not likely to forget the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael anytime soon. The areas that were hit hardest, Mexico Beach and Panama City Beach, are still recovering a year later. And yet, the Panama City Beach Pier (a rebuild Nature Bridges contributed to) is still standing, having survived Hurricane Michael.
As a whole, Pier Park sustained minimal damage during Hurricane Michael. Most of the structures, including the pier itself, were built to sustain high winds. The original PCB Pier was built in 1970, but suffered extensive structural damage during the 2004 hurricane season (Hurricane Ivan). The pier was closed for 3 years before it was completely rebuilt. Nature Bridges was brought on to participate in the rebuild of the “new and improved” hurricane-resistant pier – taller, wider, and built with blow out deck panels.
“Should a hurricane or storm surge threaten the pier, the timber panels we fabricated are designed to blow out to keep them from damaging the superstructure.” – JD James, President of Nature Bridges
We’ve also worked on the beaches of Walton County and Big Lagoon State Park near Pensacola, Florida, as a result of hurricanes causing serious beach erosion. We are often contracted by clients to help prepare their resort properties for large storms, by protecting existing buildings and amenities from flying debris and other storm damage.
We are committed to building graceful, durable structures that weather the storms and stand the test of time. If you have incurred storm damage to your boardwalks, bridges, pavilions, decks, docks or any other timber structure, and require storm damage repairs or dock repair, Nature Bridges can handle them all.
